Building your brand is like building a house

Drawing in blue of a house

Spending time working closely with start-ups and small businesses, I've come to realize how abstract and intimidating the term 'branding' can be. Unless you are familiar with the branding world, it’s difficult to know which specialist is doing which job, when their expertise is needed, and why. Getting started on this journey can be overwhelming – sensing you want to stop before you start!

This got me thinking. So, in an effort to demystify the world of branding so you can better understand what it means, how to transform your business idea into a brand, and get your brand out into the world, I thought I would share a great metaphor that explains the process and provides a clear starting point.

Imagine building a house – just as you wouldn't start without a solid foundation, creating your brand follows the same principle because skipping this step risks a shaky brand identity and an empty piggy bank.

Building your brand foundation starts with you; we explore your personal inspiration, motivation, and dreams for your brand idea. We then get close-up and curious about your idea itself, and peek into the lives of the people you want to attract.

Once you have gathered all the insights, we will create a handbook of everything we have achieved, and you'll have clarity about what your brand stands for. You can then invite the designers, writers, social media specialists, website developers, and others to start creating your branding house. Each specialist can create a room with interconnecting doors and stairs, so they can share their ideas, thoughts, and knowledge, and together build your ‘brand house’ with a clear and unified brand vision that deeply aligns with your brand foundation.

Throughout this process, you will remain the chief architect because you built the foundations yourself. Like a good friend, you know your brand better than anyone else—how it thinks, how it feels, the story it needs to tell, and the clients you desire.
