Creating space with closed eyes

Drawing of a person closing eyes and being relaxed

Over the past few months, I’ve noticed a fascinating habit that has become second nature to me — I find myself closing my eyes, even when I am not asleep. Don’t get me wrong; it’s only for a few seconds or a few minutes and I appreciate it can look a little odd. But if you dare to close your eyes from time to time throughout the day, you may be surprised by what you discover.

Firstly, closing your eyes simply calms you down. Vision, it seems, sucks a lot of mental energy and sight can easily overwhelm our other senses. Those closed-eye moments can free up our brain power, giving us the much needed space to enhance focus, to listen, boost creativity, and find answers to challenging questions or situations or just to simply deepen our self-awareness and re-connect with ourselves.

I Kick-off each of my coaching sessions by encouraging my clients to join me in a simple mindfulness exercise to help us become more present and receptive to any topics that can pop up during our conversation. From there on, I intuitively close my eyes — for short moments — throughout the session to support active listening, deepen my focus and heighten my creative thinking. Creating this space can inspire new insights and understandings enabling me to guide our conversations and support my client more effectively throughout each session, especially when deep emotions

or challenging circumstances are at play.

And the additional beauty of this simple technique is that a quick reboot and brain boost can stimulate a deeper connection and synergy with my clients.

So, try closing your eyes today, just for a moment or two, and see what it brings. I would love to hear from you.
