It seems like saboteurs have taken center stage recently as I find them lingering around more than I’d prefer. Whilst it’s an opportunity for self-reflection and self-management, it can sometimes be a little tiring to be dealing with them all by yourself. So I was pleased that my Co-Active buddy John, and I had scheduled a chat today to coach and catch up.
During our conversation I mentioned the bubbling simmers of self-doubt kicking in, and a feeling of overwhelm that had dulled my creative spark. Despite having a good chat with my saboteurs, practicing mindfulness and accepting what will be will be - it wasn’t as effective as I hoped. Our chat couldn’t have come at a better time, it was time show the sneaky saboteurs the exit – great relief — so I could finally tap into a more positive mindset and move on.
Happy to dive into a short visualization exercise with John I rediscovered my creative spark, through an image of fireflies. Tiny, luminous, fireflies that danced around, filling my mind and body with their glow and energy. Each one representing a thought or idea — of which I had many. However, they felt lighter, distinct and more manageable. I could choose to activate the brightest fire flies first and let the others float around and warm up before I tackled them. Even my beautiful notebook, initially named ‘my book of big ideas,’ is now ‘My book of fire flies.’ which is infinitely more inspiring.
Visualization – similar to the fireflies — will stay with you and become a powerful and reliable tool - your super hero - on days when you need encouragement or a helping hand. When those challenging days reappear and creativity feels at a low — I will revisit this mental image and release my bright fireflies to push back the sense of self-doubt, allowing my mind and thoughts twinkle once more.
